Accounting Specialist - MaineCare in Augusta, ME

This position is responsible for tracking, processing, and reconciling of Accounts Payables for Maine CDC’s Health and Environmental Testing Laboratory (HETL).  The position will work closely with, and within a team of other financial specialists. This position will develop and maintain working relationships with laboratory vendors. This position will cross train and learn other aspects of the finance processes necessary to support the day-to-day operations of this critical team.

Other responsibilities include:

·       Learn to navigate several data platforms necessary for the financial operations of the laboratory.

·       Create, and improve upon, standard operating procedures.

·       Coordinate with other HETL finance team members to ensure and create efficiencies in process interactions.

·       Train and on-board new team members and help to define their roles.

·       Advice the HETL Finance Team leader.






Knowledge, Skills and Certifications

Entry level knowledge’s, skills, and/or abilities may be acquired through, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO the following course work/training and/or experience).


An Associate Degree from an accredited educational institution in Accounting -OR- any Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited educational institution that includes 12 semester hours in accounting coursework -OR- 3 years of practical work experience providing complex technical support to professional accounting staff.  Accounting coursework must include successful completion of Principles of Accounting I & II plus two other accounting-related courses.  Experience must demonstrate comprehension and application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) guidelines.


Preferred candidates will have

  • Ability to work effectively with program personnel, accounting staff and agency managers
  • Ability to apply accounting theory and principles to identify and resolve systemic issues
  • Knowledge of General Accepted Accounting Principles
  • Knowledge if Governmental Accounting Standard Board Guidelines
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse group of internal and external partners
  • Knowledge of standardized office software technology and products (word processing, spreadsheets, and databases)
  • Ability to work with managers and staff to provide outreach materials for individuals in need of technical assistance

Duties and Deliverable (Outline of specific job duties)

  • Daily processing and reconciliation of accounts payable transactions
  • Assist in the accounts payable reconciliation process
  • Collate and verify accounts payable totals for Advantage ME
  • Update financial reports
  • Locate records from electronic and manual record systems
  • Support accounting tasks for the HETL
  • Perform routine office tasks
  • Create spreadsheets and perform data management
  • Organize, record, and maintain computerized and/or manual files


This job is scheduled for 40 hours per week.  Normal working hours are between 8 am and 5 pm, Monday-Friday.  All work must be performed onsite at the Augusta, ME location, there is no ability to work remotely.
